Reports to: President of Facing History and Ourselves
Location: Brookline, MA

Facing History’s new strategic plan calls for a significant scaling of impact over the next 5 years. The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) will join an organization with a stellar reputation and oversee the full range of digital strategies and supporting technology across the organization that will enable Facing History to reach the growth goals of our strategic plan. He/she will be help develop further digital solutions that support the transformation of our core business model, enabling Facing History to significantly scale its reach and impact. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who may currently be a CIO/CTO in the private sector and who is seeking to make a significant societal impact.

The successful candidate will have a track record of helping organizations successfully transform their products, services, and marketing capabilities from print/analog to digital, while working effectively with stakeholders to create processes that support that transformation. She/he will also be adept at developing and supporting systems that make the collection, analysis, and use of data for monitoring and continuous improvement part of the organization’s DNA. Additionally, the CTO will be an innovator who has the vision to help the organization imagine future ed tech products and services, while possessing the skills to build the technology and operational infrastructure to support that vision.

Position Summary

Key Year One Objective

Within the first year, the CTO’s vision, credibility and presence will be felt and embraced across the organization, and a well-articulated technology and product roadmap will be in place to guide the specific action steps and resources needed to further the “digital transformation” of Facing History’s business model across all departments.

Specific Responsibilities

· As a member of the senior team, develop Facing History’s forward-thinking technology strategy in support of the organization’s mission and strategic plan. Continuously benchmark Facing History capabilities in relation to a rapidly changing marketplace through research, networking, and case studies of leading edge (current major platforms include Drupal, Salesforce, Hubspot, and Google Apps).
· Serve as a spokesperson for Facing History’s technology approach, representing the organization to outside parties as needed. Present at Board meetings.
· Partner with key stakeholders in Program, Content, Development, Communications, Marketing, Operations, Finance and Human Resources to provide technology solutions that support business objectives. Implement supporting technology to enable data capture and analysis for decision-making.
· Develop and implement innovative solutions that integrate technology, content management, creative, product development, CRM, and marketing functions. Oversee the implementation of “best in class” technology solutions to further the growth/scale of Facing History’s reach and impact. Utilize “rapid prototyping” strategies where appropriate to refine and modify solutions. Define a “continuous delivery” model for product enhancements.
· Partner with Marketing on digital and web strategies, and implement technology to support marketing, including data capture and analysis.
· Partner with Communications to oversee web site redesigns. Provide ongoing measurement and analysis and continuously improve user experience (for both content and marketing goals), information architecture, and design. Oversee operations to optimize web site performance including SEO, SEM, PPC, etc.
· Oversee the management of, and provide effective leadership and mentoring for the day-to-day operations of the Information Technology Team and Digital Infrastructure team. Demonstrate both the strategic skills and roll-up-your-sleeves mentality to help make these teams successful. Provide clear goals and regular feedback. Utilize a “Growth Mindset” approach that fosters employee engagement, values learning, and encourages the model workplace envisioned by Facing History’s core values.
· Oversee management of all hardware, software, databases, licenses, maintenance, technology vendors and risk management/security issues, including compliance with privacy rules


Education and Experience

· Master’s in related field (or equivalent life/work experience) with 10 years relevant work experience, including 7 of which must be senior managerial and strategic (e.g., currently a CTO, CIO, or VP of Technology)
· Experience providing digital/technology perspectives as member of a senior management teams
· Change management: experience leading a successful effort to significantly upgrade technology in an organization
· Online marketing and social media expertise
· Experience leading teams and working across departments
· Experience ensuring that technology processes meet expectations for global privacy needs.
· Experience with CRM’s, relational database, and online community platforms a plus
· International experience, experience in the K-12 market a plus

· The ability to evaluate competencies of staff and to define what professional development may be needed
· Strong communication skills: being persuasive, adaptable, and visionary
· Skills in software architecture, product development and project management
· Ability to recruit top talent and lead teams across multiple sites/countries
