Dr. Martha Minow
Harvard Law Professor Martha Minow shares the story of an anti-American rally to explore the mystery of hate.
Transcript:
As I was coming over here, I was listening to the National Public Radio and there was an interview with a reporter who had been in Afghanistan. And he was describing how he is six foot three and was at, appeared at, a rally the week before in Pakistan after Friday Prayers, an anti American rally, and there was somebody blocking his view, holding up a big sign saying "death to all the Americans" and he asked this fellow" would you please lower the sign so I can see?" and they got in to a conversation and they ended up so, that he actually said to the fellow "could I have that sign?" and the man said "sure you want it?" and then "can I pay you for it?" " No, no, no you're our brother." Now the reporter then was reflecting on the radio, what does it mean to say death to Americans and then have this cordial conversation? That's part of the mystery of what we call hate, that there can be this abstract and intense and mobilizing emotion and then there can be human connection spontaneously. It can work the opposite way too there can be human connection and that can break immediately.
