Welcome to the Becoming American Museum - In the fall of 2004, students from diverse backgrounds in 13 Facing History classes across the United States had the opportunity to explore themes of identity, membership, and democracy. These schools are among dozens of Facing History classes using the Becoming American: The Chinese Experience documentary and study guide. After viewing selections from the film and participating in lessons on Becoming American, students had the opportunity to share their thoughts in online conversations with a partner class in another part of the US. In these conversations, students built an online learning community with a variety of perspectives through which they could reflect on their own identity and explore the opportunities and challenges of living in the United States today.
Following these online conversations, students worked on projects in which they reflected in words, art, music, and video on the issues raised by Becoming American. A panel of Facing History program staff and board members selected examples of the students’ work to be hosted on Facing History’s first online museum. This museum is accessible to students, educators and others throughout the United States and around the world, allowing you to participate in your own exploration of the themes in Becoming American.
You may view the student work either by school or by Becoming American theme. We welcome your thoughts and comments in the Guest Book.
