In this two-day workshop we will explore how beliefs about race have shaped--and challenged--American's identity as a land of "freedom and opportunity." We'll look at significant events and movements in American history--slavery, immigration, the eugenics movement, the civil rights movement--and will consider legacies of each in American society today.

-How was a slave-owning society able to articulate lasting ideals of liberty and freedom?
-How has immigration both stretched and constricted the boundaries of membership in American society?
-How did the racial ideas of the American eugenics movement impact public policy?
-How did the civil rights movement redefine notics of American citizenshp?

Ultimately, this journey will bring participants back to the present. Examining American history through the lens of race and membership empowers us and our students to value how our choices shape contemporary America. Participants will receive a resource book and membership in the Facing History and Ourselves Teacher Network.
