This workshop, in partnership with the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, an internationally recognized contemporary dance company, will emphasize experiential learning through movement and art-driven dialogue. Educators will think deeply about how the choices people make individually and collectively shape a society. The story of Raphael Lemkin, an upstander who coined the term genocide and devoted his life to fighting it, will be explored as an illustration of the courage and initiative that are needed to protect democracy and human rights. We will model methodology in which the body illuminates text and in which imagery and spoken word deepen understanding. Participants will receive a copy of the Facing History study guide, Totally Unofficial: Raphael Lemkin and the Genocide Convention.
